Policy Brief on The Gambia: – PRONOUNCEMENT OF THE GAMBIA AS AN ISLAMIC STATE: PERCEPTIONS AND REALITIES

On December 11 2015, President Yahya Jammeh declared The Gambia as an ‘Islamic State’ during his tour of Brufut, a community, 20km from Banjul. He stressed that the rights of the Christian minority and other religions will be respected while women would not be held to any particular dress code. However, a directive from the presidency on January 4 2016 exhorted women to wear head ties, a dress code in conformity to Islamic teachings.
