Organised under the auspices of the African Union’s Political Affairs, Peace and Security (PAPS) Department, in collaboration with its Gender, Peace and Security Division, the African Union Network of Think Tanks for Peace (Nett4Peace), and UN Women, the regional consultation brought together around 30 stakeholders from all eight of the African Union’s recognised Regional Economic Communities (RECs).
Held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 17 to 18 June 2025, the meeting reviewed progress made by the RECs and the African Union (AU) in advancing the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda. Participants also explored strategies to address evolving dynamics resulting from recent geopolitical shifts, changing global conflict patterns, and emerging mediation landscapes that are influencing the implementation of the WPS agenda across Africa.
As a key partner to ECOWAS, WANEP presented progress, challenges, and perspectives on implementing the WPS agenda in West Africa.
Ahead of the event, WANEP also participated in a one-day Expert Meeting with key partners to outline the framework for a continental study evaluating WPS implementation across Africa.
Insights from both gatherings will contribute to this broader study, which aims to document achievements and identify innovative, locally led or regionally developed solutions, such as policy reforms and institutional mechanisms, that can accelerate progress on the WPS agenda beyond the 25th anniversary of UNSCR 1325.
