From 10 to 12 June 2025, the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP) took part in a three-day workshop in Accra, Ghana, focused on strengthening the capacity of Member States in reporting on the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) Agenda using the ECOWAS Simplified Continental Results Framework (CRF).

The workshop brought together 30 stakeholders, including representatives from Ghana’s Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, other relevant state institutions, civil society organisations, and development partners such as the European Union Delegation and the German Embassy in Ghana.

Speaking on behalf of WANEP at the opening ceremony— in its capacity as co-chair of the ECOWAS WPS Steering Committee—Madame Josiane Sombo, Regional Coordinator for WPS, commended the ECOWAS Commission and its partners for convening the timely workshop.

She emphasised that beyond being a technical reporting tool, the CRF provides a valuable opportunity to bridge data gaps on WPS, foster accountability, and support evidence-based advocacy for the realisation of the WPS agenda in West Africa. Madame Josiane encouraged participants to make the most of the platform to deepen their understanding of the CRF—particularly what to report and how to report—in order to promote harmonised and coherent reporting across the region.

She also reiterated WANEP’s commitment to working hand-in-hand with ECOWAS, within the framework of their partnership, to support Member States in collecting and analysing data on the WPS agenda, with the aim of assessing progress and identifying gaps that need to be addressed.

In her concluding remarks, Madame Josiane called on participants to reflect on how the reporting process can help amplify the voices and lived experiences of women and girls affected by conflict, in order to drive better policies and more inclusive peace processes.

To date, eight countries in West Africa, including Ghana, have benefited from this capacity-building exercise and are expected to submit their annual WPS reports by the final quarter of 2025. These reports will contribute to the development of a regional annual report on WPS.
