Launched in 2002, WAPI seeks to increase the knowledge base in West Africa by contributing to research and enhancing the skills and expertise of individuals, organizations and businesses in the area of conflict prevention and peacebuilding. WAPI strives to overcome the gap in practice, knowledge and skills in peacebuilding in the sub region and increase the number of competent, active peacebuilding practitioners in West Africa, thus, increasing the possibilities of achieving reconciled, just and stable societies in the sub-region.

WAPI draws its faculty from highly recognized professional practitioners and academics from institutions and universities from around the world. Since 2005, WAPI is organized at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) in Accra, Ghana. WANEP has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with KAIPTC with the view to increasing cooperation in the organization of WAPI.

As at 2010 WANEP has trained and strengthened the capacity of over 400 practitioners and regional bodies including ECOWAS and UN agencies. The institute has drawn participants from across Africa, Europe, Asia and America. Drawing from our global reach, experience, extensive training portfolio and partnerships, we develop innovative courses which reflect and respond to current and emerging issues and trends in peacebuilding and human security.
