WANEP Supports Multistakeholder Training on Disaster Risk Reduction in Zambia

0

The West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP), in collaboration with the Southern African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (SACCORD), and with support from the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and the African Union (AU), is supporting a three-day multistakeholder training workshop on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), taking place from 7 to 9 May 2025 in Zambia.

The training convenes 38 participants drawn from key state institutions—including the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU), and Bureau members from the Ministries of Defence, Finance, Health, and Foreign Affairs—as well as civil society organisations (CSOs), the media, and academia from national, provincial, and district levels. The workshop aims to strengthen capacity in addressing both natural and human-induced threats such as drought, deforestation, illegal logging, and water-related conflict.

A major highlight of the workshop is the emphasis on reinforcing people-centred early warning systems across the entire value chain to enhance disaster preparedness and response. This focus is in line with Zambia’s commitment to reducing vulnerability and building resilience, as articulated in the Country Structural Vulnerability and Resilience Assessment (CSVRA) conducted under the African Union’s Continental Structural Conflict Prevention Framework (AU CSCPF).

This training forms part of the broader objective of Strengthening functional structures and skills for conflict prevention and management through strategic collaboration between the State and CSOs in Zambia, under the GIZ-funded initiative Strengthening Multistakeholder Conflict Prevention Architectures in Africa.
