West Africa faces a continued trajectory of insecurity caused by the rising level of transnational organised crime, including illicit drug trafficking and abuse, proliferation of arms, and irregular migration. These compound the complex security challenge from armed non-state actors and diverse communal conflicts in the region. Drug traffickers have exploited existing weak security systems to expand their transit routes through West Africa, from South America to Europe and North America
