Policy Brief:- Illegal Mining in Burkina Faso: A Contributory Factor to Current Peace and Security Crisis?

Since the early 1980s, mining has been an integral part of Burkina Faso’s economy. The recent boom in the prices of minerals, especially gold in the world market has led to a significant increase in the contribution of mining to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) which has trebled from 3 percent in 2009 to 9 percent in 2016 with its share of exports also increasing from 43 percent to 69 percent.
