The event brought together approximately 80 participants, including key stakeholders such as representatives of ECOWAS, policymakers, civil society actors, analysts, media professionals, and researchers.<\/p>\n<p>The dialogue, which was under the theme \u201c<em>Understanding the Geopolitical and Strategic Changes in West Africa: Emerging Challenges and the Future of ECOWAS<\/em>,\u201d offered a platform for participants to reflect on ongoing challenges facing ECOWAS in the context of evolving regional dynamics and the geopolitical\/geostrategic changes. A major focus of discussion was the withdrawal of the Alliance of Sahel States (Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger) from ECOWAS, and the exploration of strategic pathways towards their reintegration.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9541\" src=\"http:\/\/wanep.org\/wanep\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/IMG_4659.JPG-300x200.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"446\" height=\"297\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wanep.org\/wanep\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/IMG_4659.JPG-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/wanep.org\/wanep\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/IMG_4659.JPG-1024x683.png 1024w, https:\/\/wanep.org\/wanep\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/IMG_4659.JPG-768x512.png 768w, https:\/\/wanep.org\/wanep\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/IMG_4659.JPG-1536x1025.png 1536w, https:\/\/wanep.org\/wanep\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/IMG_4659.JPG.png 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 446px) 100vw, 446px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Delivering a keynote address, ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security, Ambassador Dr Abdel-Fatau Musah, reflected on the evolving political landscape in the region. He praised WANEP and its co-conveners for their dedication to peace and stability, stating, \u201cI am not oblivious of the fact that this high-level policy dialogue has been convened at a historic crossroads and consequential moment in the evolution of ECOWAS.\u201d He also lauded the efforts of civil society organisations in resolving crises across West Africa.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9545\" src=\"http:\/\/wanep.org\/wanep\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/6K2A3717-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"453\" height=\"302\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wanep.org\/wanep\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/6K2A3717-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wanep.org\/wanep\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/6K2A3717-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/wanep.org\/wanep\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/6K2A3717-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wanep.org\/wanep\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/6K2A3717-1536x1025.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/wanep.org\/wanep\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/6K2A3717.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 453px) 100vw, 453px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In her remarks, Mrs Levinia Addae-Mensah, Executive Director of WANEP, described the timing of the dialogue as \u201cmarked by unprecedented dynamics and waves of uncertainties.\u201d She noted, \u201cOur beloved West Africa is confronted with a complex array of challenges that threaten to erode decades of investments in peacebuilding, regional integration, democratic governance, and social cohesion.\u201d She emphasised the urgent need for innovative responses and described the exit of the Alliance of Sahel States as \u201ca profound indicator of the deep fractures that must be confronted with courage, candour, and commitment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Addae-Mensah further commended the Social Science Research Council\u2019s African Peacebuilding Network (APN) and Next Generation Social Sciences in Africa (Next Gen) programme and CORN West Africa for their longstanding collaboration with WANEP in generating knowledge and supporting dialogue platforms and preventive diplomacy, especially through WANEP\u2019s early warning systems, conflict analysis, policy research, and support to mediation at various levels.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9538\" src=\"http:\/\/wanep.org\/wanep\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/6K2A3748.jpg-300x200.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"455\" height=\"303\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wanep.org\/wanep\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/6K2A3748.jpg-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/wanep.org\/wanep\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/6K2A3748.jpg-1024x683.png 1024w, https:\/\/wanep.org\/wanep\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/6K2A3748.jpg-768x512.png 768w, https:\/\/wanep.org\/wanep\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/6K2A3748.jpg-1536x1025.png 1536w, https:\/\/wanep.org\/wanep\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/6K2A3748.jpg.png 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 455px) 100vw, 455px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Dr Cyril Obi, Programme Director of the Social Science Research Council\u2019s African Peacebuilding Network (APN) and Next Generation Social Sciences in Africa (Next Gen) programme, called for stronger collaboration between scholars and policymakers in support of ECOWAS\u2019s mission. \u201cThis gathering is a place to find solutions, not a place to allocate labels,\u201d he remarked. He urged stakeholders to confront ECOWAS\u2019s current challenges with clarity, unity, and a shared sense of purpose.<\/p>\n<p>The event featured a series of panel discussions on key themes such as unconstitutional changes of government, strategies for peace and security in West Africa, and the role of regional, continental, and global partnerships in addressing complex security challenges.<\/p>\n<p>Breakout sessions allowed participants to reflect in smaller groups on ECOWAS\u2019s engagement with the AES bloc, as well as with China, Russia, Gulf States and Western powers.
