As a member of the Mediation Support Network (MSN), the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP) participated in the 2026 MSN Annual Meeting, held from 3 to 5 June 2026 in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. The meeting brought together approximately 30 mediation practitioners and experts from across the MSN network to exchange experiences, share knowledge, and reflect on current trends in mediation practice.<\/p>\n

The meeting was hosted by the MSN Secretariat in collaboration with the Zimbabwe Institute and the Embassy of Switzerland in Zimbabwe, and forms part of MSN\u2019s ongoing efforts to strengthen mediation practice through collaboration, peer learning, and the sharing of approaches to conflict prevention and resolution. It provided a platform for organisations and practitioners working in diverse contexts to engage in practical responses to the increasingly complex nature of conflict.<\/p>\n

Over the three-day meeting, participants discussed a range of issues affecting the effectiveness and sustainability of mediation. Particular attention was given to the opportunities and risks associated with insider mediation, including the challenges faced by local mediators operating within their own communities and contexts. Participants also explored the dynamics of collaboration between insider and external mediators, identifying strategies to maximise the strengths of such partnerships while mitigating potential risks.<\/p>\n

The meeting further examined the issue of sustainable financing for mediation initiatives, recognising that long-term and flexible funding remains essential for effective preventive action and peace processes. Participants highlighted the need for funding models that support continuous engagement rather than short-term interventions, enabling mediators and peacebuilding actors to respond more effectively to evolving situations.<\/p>\n

Participants recommended that the MSN Secretariat strengthen continuous engagement with members throughout the year, beyond the annual meeting. They further encouraged the proactive documentation and sharing of success stories and positive outcomes from mediation work, in order to enhance the visibility of the Network\u2019s impact and demonstrate the value of locally led mediation efforts.<\/p>\n

WANEP\u2019s participation in the meeting reflects its continued commitment to engaging with global networks of mediation practitioners, strengthening institutional learning, and promoting collaborative approaches to conflict prevention and peacebuilding across West Africa.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
