Demographic Analysis Sierra Leone is a small West African country with a total landmass of 73,325 sq.km and an estimated population of 7,092,113 people of which 41.7% is estimated to be less than 15 years old and women 50.9% (2015 Population and Housing Census). It is bordered by the Republic of Guinea on the North and East, by the Republic of Liberia on the South, and by the Atlantic Ocean on the West. There are 12 districts in the country and its capital, Freetown, was founded in 1787 as a resettlement for freed slaves. Sierra Leone boasts of the oldest University in West Africa, Fourah Bay College opened in 1827.
