The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), Dr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas has commended the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding, WANEP for its sustained vigilance and permanent focus on the prevention of conflicts, which he said contributed immensely to peace and stability in the region. He said on account of these successes WANEP has made, the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS) is determined to strengthen its collaboration with WANEP in addressing common threats affecting the region.
Dr. Chambas was the keynote speaker and subsequently launched the WANEP book, “Strides and Strains of Civil Society Organizations in West Africa: The WANEP Story” and officially unveiled the WANEP permanent regional secretariat on February 2, 2017. “Today’s event constitutes another demonstration that WANEP is a key actor in the frontline of conflict prevention,” he added. He described the work of WANEP in areas of early warning, capacity building, dialogue and mediation, women in peacebuilding and peace education, as a reference point of the efforts of civil society organizations in the advancement of peace and security in the region.
Recalling his affinity with WANEP, Dr. Chambas said his relationship with the organization commenced in his days as the President of the ECOWAS Commission when the first Memorandum of Understanding between WANEP and ECOWAS was signed. “At that time, I already envisioned WANEP’s great potential advancing peace and security in the region. And on this day, I am very pleased to testify that WANEP has not disappointed me, “ he said.

The WANEP ground-breaking event of book launch and official opening of its regional office under the chairmanship of His Excellency Marcel Alain De Souza, President of the ECOWAS Commission attracted major partners and key stakeholders among whom were the two co-founders of WANEP; Dr. Sam Gbaydee Doe and Honorable Emmanuel Bombande. It also brought together current and former staff of WANEP across the region.
