The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Office for West Africa (UNOWA) His Excellency Dr. Mohammed Ibn Chambas on February 2, 2017 launched the WANEP book titled; Strides and Strains of Civil Society Organizations in West Africa: The WANEP Story and unveiled its permanent Regional Secretariat.
The ground-breaking event was chaired by His Excellency Marcel Alain De Souza President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission and was attended by major partners and key stakeholders including Ambassadors, representatives of civil society organizations, government representatives, International Development Partners, the media and security agencies among others. WANEP staff past and present from across the region will be present at the event.
The book; “Strides and Strains of Civil Society Organizations in Africa: The WANEP Story” provides a platform for the story of WANEP to be told. It is an opportunity for the organization to share its experiences in peacebuilding, networking and organizational management; successes and challenges and its legacy in the Civil Society sector. The book reviewer, Isaac Olawale Albert is the current Director of the Institute of African Studies, University of Ibadan, South West Nigeria and the immediate past Chairman of the WANEP Regional Board. He is a professor of History and specialist in conflict analysis and process planning with nearly two decades of experience in peacebuilding practice.
WANEP came into being in the 1990s when the West Africa landscape was blighted with unprecedented levels of violence and destruction especially the conflicts in Liberia and Sierra Leone. After over 17 years of peacebuilding practice with sound institutional management, WANEP has grown to become a household name in West Africa with national offices in all the ECOWAS Member states, and member organizations spread across the region. The acquisition of a permanent Regional Secretariat marks a major milestone in the history of the organization.
